The Gospel of Judas is an ancient Gnostic gospel that was discovered in the mid-1970s. It was written in Coptic, a language used in Egypt in the early Christian era, and is believed to have been composed between the 2nd and 4th centuries CE.

The Gospel of Judas presents a different perspective on the relationship between Jesus and Judas Iscariot than is presented in the New Testament gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. In the New Testament, Judas is portrayed as a betrayer who handed Jesus over to the authorities to be crucified. However, in the Gospel of Judas, Judas is depicted as a favored disciple who was chosen by Jesus to play a special role in his mission.

The text of the Gospel of Judas was fragmented and damaged, but it was reconstructed and translated into English in 2006. The publication of the gospel generated significant interest and debate among scholars and the public, as it challenged long-held beliefs about the role of Judas in the life and death of Jesus.

It’s important to note that the Gospel of Judas is not accepted as part of the New Testament canon by the majority of Christian traditions, including the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Protestant Churches. These traditions consider the 27 books of the New Testament to be authoritative and inspired by God. The Gospel of Judas is considered to be a Gnostic text and is not considered authoritative by mainstream Christians.
