Jay Smith’s Claim
Christian apologist and evangelist Jay Smith (YouTube) is known for advancing a revisionist view that the Qur’an was written later than traditionally believed and that the Prophet Muhammad may not have existed as described in Islamic tradition. These arguments are associated with some schools of “revisionist Islamic studies” (e.g., Patricia Crone, Christoph Luxenberg, Dan Gibson). They often propose that Islam emerged gradually, influenced by surrounding Jewish, Christian, and other religious traditions.
However, it’s important to note:
- Mainstream historians (even non-Muslims) generally accept that Muhammad was a real historical figure in 7th-century Arabia, though details of his life are debated.
- Manuscript evidence of the Qur’an (like the Birmingham manuscripts) dates back to within a few decades of Muhammad’s lifetime, which weakens the theory that it was “invented” centuries later.
